The New Frontiersman
The first week of 2009 has been busier than usual. Most of us in the office expected the typical post-Christmas two-week lull, where we reflect on the year gone and the projects to come. But a fair few were up to our eyeballs working on the build of, and a strategy for, a new viral site as part of our campaign on WATCHMEN.
TheNewFrontiersman.net is inspired by the right-wing extremist publication read by the character Rorschach in the original graphic novel. On Thursday we launched a static landing page and tipped off a few influential blogs and film sites. What’s it going to contain? Documents, photos and video is the official word. And that’s all we are saying for now, but this hasn’t stopped the fan boys going to town with it.
The site has had over 25,000 unique visits (an impressive figure for a site with no content) and is being talked about all across the social web. We have seen conspiracy theorists debate whether the inkblot image is a dig at 20th Century Fox (this is of course not true) ahead of the highly publicised court case next week and the more tech-savvy decompile our flash movie looking for clues. We were slightly caught off guard but now think we could have some fun with this moving forward.
The consensus is this is one of the most exciting projects we have had the opportunity to work on and it is a real testament to the creative minds of the people within our agency. We started pitching ideas for this movie five years ago when it was at the helm of another director and we are thrilled that most of our original ideas are finally about to see the light of day.
NB – A number of the blogs are suggesting that the Warner Brothers team behind The Dark Knight viral campaign are driving this campaign. Our client on this project is actually Paramount who is distributing the film internationally, outside the US.
